Cornwall road closures: Helston Cross Street and Penhellaz Hill

A traffic order is in place to prevent vehicles and bicycles from passing through Penhellaz Hill and Cross Street from the beginning of March until the end of May.

This will be in force 24 hours a day, including weekends, for the entire length of the roads.

Although a warning sign at the end of Cross Street says the closure will be in place for 15 weeks – and the traffic order itself is legal for six months – the actual dates in the order state that it comes into force on March 1 and work is expected to be completed by May 28: a total of just under 13 weeks.

Cornwall Council has ordered the road closures be in place while wall repairs are carried out.

However, pedestrian access, along with vehicle access to residents and businesses, will be maintained.

A diversion route for all other trafficc will be in place through Penzance Road, Monument Road, Coinagehall Street and Church Street.

The order states: " The prohibition will be in force 24 hours a day, weekends included. While the order is in operation traffic, including bicycle movement, along the highway specified will be temporarily restricted."

However it goes on to add: "Nothing in the order will apply to any police, fire brigade, ambulance or coastguard vehicle, or any personnel on official duty, or any vehicle or person authorised by and with the permission of Cornwall Council.

"[Also] Any vehicle being used for the purposes of an emergency, such as the loss of supplies of gas, electricity or water to premises in the area, which necessitate the bringing of vehicles into the section of highway to which this order applies."
