New cases of Covid-19 have continued to decrease in Cornwall over the past week – but how does it compare to other parts of the UK?

The Press Association has published the Covid-19 case rates for every local authority area in England.

They show that in the seven days to February 15, Cornwall and Isles of Scilly had a total of 269 new cases recorded, at a rate of 47.0 cases per 100,000 people.

This was compared to 472 cases in the seven days to February 8 , when there was a rate of 82.5 cases per 10,000.

The figures are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Data for the most recent four days (February 16 to 19) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 14 have seen a rise in case rates, 299 (95%) have seen a fall and two are unchanged.

Of the 14 that have risen, the top five includes one local authority in the south west – Exeter – which has seen its case rate jump from 37.23 cases per 100,000 to 73.8 per 100,000.
