Helston's Flora Day is, unfortunately, looking likely to be cancelled, however, alternate plans have come to light.

Planting for Hope Helston initially came about as an idea to both brighten up the area during these dull and grey winter months and raise people's spirits during the pandemic.

Vanessa King, who came up with the idea, said: "The idea of the planters in town, which we are now calling 'Planting for Hope - Helston,' came about because I was bringing in some plants through my front door and an elderly gentleman who was walking past said 'oooh they're nice, it looks like spring.'

"It gave me the idea that maybe people do need a bit of spring and something nice to look at."

Since posting the idea on Facebook, the local community has got behind the idea and people are already sharing ideas on the group's page.

"People seem to enjoy my posts and I've suddenly got quite a number of readers.

"On those overcast days that are so frequent here in Cornwall Helston does have a tendency to look a bit grey and drab.

"I just thought it would be a nice idea if everyone who wanted to get involved put a little bit of something outside their door.

"I'm a keen gardener and so am worried about the threats to biodiversity and our pollinators."

As well as helping out local pollinators and biodiversity, the scheme could also help to ease the mental health issues that many people are experiencing with the current pandemic situation.

Daily walks and exercise have become the new normal for many people and the addition of bright, colourful blooms around Helston could help to lift the moods and spirits of those experiencing them.

Vanessa adds: "I know that many people doing this would create biodiverse wildlife corridors that would be as fantastic for our local wildlife as it is for us humans.

"It would be lovely to see the town full of plants!

"I'm totally overwhelmed by all the interest this has had, I didn't expect it at all."
