Cadgwith Fishing Cove Trust has reached its first milestone of £100,000 thanks to a huge community response to their crowdfunding efforts to raise £300,000.

The money is needed in order to buy two remaining historic buildings that are currently on the market, with the third having already been sold.

The community has, however, been offered first refusal on it and have also been approved a loan from the parish council to secure one of the buildings after a vote in the parish was over 80% in favour of it.

A spokesperson for Cadgwith Fishing Cove Trust said: “You've done it!

"Our crowdfunder has reached our massive first goal of £100,000, a huge milestone on our mission to raise the £300,000 needed to buy the lofts.

“We have been overwhelmed by the donations, lovely messages and the overall support we've had from people near and far.

"Who knew that our little cove was so loved.

“Thank you to everyone who has donated, shared and supported in any way they could, we are forever grateful.

“With another £200,000 to raise, we can't slow down yet.

"The crowdfunder is still open and the auctions are coming up, so please help spread the word to save our lofts.”

The buildings are all owned by different people and were put on the market at around the same time.

The community is trying to buy all three buildings to protect them from being developed into what they fear would be more second homes and holiday lets.

A new crowdfunding target of £150,000 has now been set in the hope of purchasing one of the fishing buildings outright.

The spokesperson added: "Our overall target remains at £300,000 but if our new crowdfunding target of £150,000 is achieved, it would mean we can match fund when applying for grants, giving us an even stronger case.

"We are all so grateful and humbled with the strength of public support in reaching our original £100,000 target today.

"Thank you to every single one of the 2,779 people who have given us a donation.

"The fishermen have renewed hope and a spring in their step. They are beginning to believe that this threat to their future can be removed, and that they have a future fishing from the cove, which is what they all love to do."
