Fire crews on the Lizard Peninsula spent more than two hours battling a large gorse fire last night – only to return to an unexpected act of kindness on their doorstep.

The volunteer crew of St Keverne Fire Station were called out just before 9.50pm last night, after being contacted by the fire control room.

It followed reports of a gorse fire on the cliffs in the parish.

The fire had broken out at Landkidden Cove, down from Ponsongath, and burnt a total area of around four hectares.

After getting back to the station not long after midnight, the crews were surprised and delighted to find that someone had visited while they were out to leave a treat for them on their return.

"While the crews were in attendance a very kind person left us a gift of biscuits on the station doorstep with a note to say keep safe.
