A huge fire has broken out on the Lizard road this evening involving a large area of gorse.

People are encouraged to avoid the area, which is near Predannack.

Firefighters from St Keverne, Mullion and Helston are currently fighting the blaze.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service has given a warning for people to take care if using the main road to The Lizard.

Tweeting just before 7.15pm a fire service spokesperson said: "Appliances from St Keverne, Helston and Mullion are in attendance at a gorse fire near Predannack, The Lizard.

"This is affecting the main road, please take care when driving in the area."

They added that police had been requested to provide assistance.

Writing on the Lizard Facebook page, one driver said they had just managed to get through on the main road, with embers touching the vehicle.

Another wrote: "Warning, huge fire opposite Cider Barn. Do not use the Lizard road, it’s coming across the road.

"Fire crew in attendance."

It is the third gorse fire in as many days to break out on the Lizard Peninsula.

A crew from St Keverne spent just over two hours on Friday evening, up until midnight, fighting a large fire on the cliffs at Lankidden Cove, down from Ponsongath.

The crew was back out again on Saturday afternoon, joined by another from Mullion, to put out flames on Goonhilly Downs.

This time there were two separate fire fronts, so crews split up to tackle these.

Crews used beaters to extinguish the fires.
