A new environmental group which has been set up in Penzance will be hoping to promote greener environmental policies as well as direct action alongside various other groups in the region.

Greenpeace: Penzance-Penwith, which aims to raise awareness about global environmental issues on a local level, is looking to eventually hold in-person meetings in the near future, once Covid-19 restrictions allow.

The new collective hopes to engage the local community and 'share its values of non-violence' and environmentally-positive mentalities in order to 'build a green and peaceful future.'

The group is one of many environmental groups located around Cornwall which also include Greenpeace: Falmouth & Penryn, Extinction Rebellion, Helston Climate Action Group, Cornwall environmental consultants, West Cornwall friends of the Earth and The Great Wheal Vor Community and Environment Group, the latter of which was recently set up after plans were announced to investigate further tin-mining in the area.

Greenpeace are, alongside Extinction Rebellion, one of the more well-known environmental groups operating within Devon and Cornwall and its roots date back to 1971, when it was founded by a small group of individuals who initially set off in their boat 'The Greenpeace' to stop a nuclear weapons test taking place off the Alaskan coast.

Since then, the groups has grown exponentially and now has chapters in all four corners of the globe.

Greenpeace: Penzance-Penwith will be holding it's first meeting today (March 4) at 6pm via Zoom.
