New play facilities for children have opened in Perranporth, supported by money Cornwall Council secured from nearby housing developments.

Perranzabuloe Parish Council applied to Cornwall Council for £57,532 towards replacing the outdated facilities at Bolenna Park, Perranporth.

The money came from contributions secured by Cornwall Council through section 106 agreements for housing developments at St George’s Hill, Liskey Hill and Bethan View in Perranporth.

Section 106 agreements ensure that the wider community benefits from development through a range of improvements, from road schemes or the refurbishment of community centres, to facilities such as those at Bolenna Park.

The parish council commissioned park designers SchoolScapes to replace the tired play equipment with a design that catered for all ages and abilities.

The result is a transformed park with creative play and accessible equipment, such as a roundabout that can be used by those in a wheelchair, and a swing for use by children with disabilities.

The installation work was completed during the first lockdown last year when play areas were initially closed and completed in time to be opened when restrictions were eased.

A spokesperson for Perranzabuloe Parish Council said: “Children in Perranporth are seeing the benefit of the S106 money administered by Cornwall Council.

“It was great to be able to provide some welcome activity for the children and families of the parish during the summer months away from the busier areas such as the beach.

“There were knock-on benefits too. Thanks to the provision of the S106 money for the play equipment, there was some parish council funding available, which we were able to allocate to the installation of gym equipment nearby.

“This had kindly been donated by the Gardens Charities in Perranporth with the agreement that the parish council would cover the installation costs.”

Tim Dwelly, Cornwall Council’s portfolio holder for planning, said: “These developments in Perranporth provided a substantial amount of much-needed affordable housing, but we also made sure that the wider community saw the benefit through S106 funding.

“Now the young people of Perranporth are enjoying a much more modern play area thanks to the money we secured and allocated to the parish council.”
