A Cornish college has launched a Career Consultation scheme to support 18-24-year-olds to help launch their careers after education.

Truro and Penwith College is inviting 18-24-year-olds to attend a free Careers Consultation with one of the College’s trained careers coordinators to discuss their ambitions and opportunities.

The scheme comes shortly after the college’s careers guidance programme was recognised as one of the best in the UK having achieved the newly reformed, ‘Quality Careers Standard’ from Investors in Careers for ‘outstanding careers education, information, advice and guidance.'

Following the consultation, the college will use its links with Cornish employers to help arrange a relevant traineeship that supports young people to launch their career.

It's hoped that the traineeships could offer students high-quality work placements, lasting between six weeks and one year with the placements also including training and skills that support progression to either apprenticeship jobs or full-time work.

Julian Roberts, Team Leader of the College’s Personal Professional Development team, said: "The pandemic has contributed to rising unemployment levels and young people find themselves among the hardest hit.

"The college is delighted to offer the Career Consultation Scheme to young people anywhere in Cornwall.

"We hope to see many of those who complete Traineeships progressing onto Apprenticeships or full-time work over the next twelve months."

The college is also currently consulting with employers in response to the £126 million traineeship boost announced by the Chancellor in the 2021 Budget.

Hayley McKinstry, Quality Development Manager at Truro and Penwith College, said: "The college welcomes Chancellor Rishi Sunack’s plans to increase employer incentives for hiring new apprentices along with the £126 million investment in traineeships.

"This funding will be incredibly valuable to our employer partners given the difficulties they have faced over the last twelve months.

"Alongside the government funding 95% of apprenticeship training costs for SMEs and apprenticeship levy pots funding training for larger employers, this investment will help safeguard vital opportunities for young people."
