The Fishermen's Mission will be releasing a calendar for 2022, and they want your work to feature.

The title will be ‘When the boat comes in – British fishing lives through the year.’

The Fishermen's Mission is the only national charity that works solely with fishermen and their families and celebrating 140th anniversary this year - and their only charity shop in the country is here in Helston.

The competition to get your work featured is designed for all ages and closes on April 16.

Helen Lovell from the Fishermen’s Mission in Brixham tells us how the calendar idea came together:

“We have a gifted volunteer, Graham, who often worked into the small hours poring over images to design Calendar Gills, our truly amazing 2021 calendar. This featured beautiful original artwork from respected artists and mouth-watering seasonal seafood recipes from top UK chefs. It was hugely successful and this year, together with Graham, we’d like to repeat that success but with help from you.”

On how the idea for the calender came about, Helen Lovell from the Fishermen’s Mission said: “We have a gifted volunteer, Graham, who often worked into the small hours poring over images to design Calendar Gills, our truly amazing 2021 calendar.

The charity is reliant on donations which are especially vital now due of the pandemic. Helen added: “Our work is based on building trusted relationships through face-to-face meetings on the quayside, on fishing vessels and through home visits.

"With lockdown things have suddenly changed but also stayed the same. Social distancing means we can’t be there in person when dealing with fishermen, but we are not, and never will be, socially distant.

"The pandemic has temporarily changed our method of working but not our method of caring; always there, always ready to listen, always ready to do the best for our fishing communities.”

The charity have invited everyone from around the UK, of all ages to be inspired by the theme - when the boat comes in – British fishing lives through the year and to get creating.

Your fish recipes maybe new or handed down over the generations and your artwork can be of any medium, as long as the image can be emailed.

Winning entries will receive a free copy of our 2022 calendar displaying their work. Runners-up will also be featured in a collage in the calendar.
