A bench in the outside area of Penlee Lifeboat station was vandalised with graffiti on Sunday with litter and cigarette butts also being left everywhere.

The seats, which were donated by a local couple in support of Penlee Lifeboat were found by Coxswain Patch Harvey and Mechanic Tony Rendell on Monday morning who cleared the mess straight away.

In a post on social media, Penlee Lifeboat described finding the graffiti as not being a great start to the week and explained how rubbish had been left on the premises which included both food and cigarettes.

Elaine Bawden, press officer for Penlee Lifeboat, said: "We're bitterly disappointed that two lovely seats that were donated by a lovely couple who support Penlee Lifeboat have been treated with such disrespect really.

"They were drawn on and there was lots of rubbish left outside the lifeboat station and lots of cigarette ends, it's bitterly disappointing that whoever did it didn't treat that area with more respect.

"It's the first time it's happend, and that area is actually covered by Newlyn Harbour CCTV so that might give us some indication who it was.

"It's a real favourite spot for people that are out walking, they like to sit there and watch the harbour and watch the lifeboats because they're just down below, so it's really sad.

"Our coxswain, Patch Harvey and our mechanic Tony Rendell, they got straight down to it, cleared it all up, cleared the graffiti and tidied up everything.

"It's something we'll be keeping an eye on in the future.

"Ideally, if we caught the culprits or found out who they were, it would be nice if they could be tasked cleaning up a particular part of Newlyn and clearing it of rubbish.

"You probably learn more from doing that than any other any other penalty I would think.

"As it was, they probably shouldn't be congregating there anyway, what with the national lockdown restrictions, so we'll see what happens this weekend."
