It's a much-loved fixture of many towns in Cornwall and now Helston is to get its own meadery.

With restaurants in Redruth and Newlyn, among others, the flamboyant style of dining, with its medieval themed decor and menu including family favourites such as breaded mushrooms, barbecue ribs and 'chicken in the rough' – not forgetting its infamous 'death by chocolate' dessert and, of course, the mead itself – is a firm favourite for many.

Up until now people from Helston have had to travel to indulge in a meadery trip, but it seems not for much longer.

In what is likely to cause great excitement, a sign has gone up outside what has most recently been The Reel Pizza Company in Wendron Street, next door to the Flora Cinema, announcing 'The Helston Meadery opening soon'.

At the same time, the page on Companies House for The Reel Pizza Company, states that this was registered between November 6, 2017 and March 2, 2021 but has now changed its name to Helston Meadery Ltd.

A spokesperson for the company told the Packet that they hoped to open on May 17, in line with indoor hospitality restrictions lifting.

He said it was still the same owners of the restaurants, and having done some research they decided that this could be a popular way forward.

He said: "Meaderies have always been a very popular experience. We've redesigned the inside completely, added some booths.

"We just saw it as a popular form of eating. We're very excited about the whole project."

Rather than medieval theme, the meadery will take on an old maritime theme, with a new wooden entrance door and a figurehead on the outside.

A traditional meadery style menu is promised, with a few additions of their own.

More information is to follow in the coming weeks, with a new website launching soon.
