There were smiles all round in Helston today as businesses finally got their long-awaited reopening after months of closure.

From hair salons to pubs and all non-essential retail shops, the town was busy with people keen to get out and enjoy what Helston has to offer again.

It was just as exciting for the business owners themselves, who have been champing at the bit get going again.

Becky Cross, owner of Head Rush hair salon in Coinagehall Street, said: "Finally I feel like myself again, doing what I love.

"It's been great to catch up with customers and everyone who’s been in has been great. Even under the masks you can tell they are smiling!"

There were queues along the street as people queued to get back into the barbers for a cut.

It was a similar feeling in shops. Sarah Corbridge, owner of Wearnes the jewellers and Cornish gifts shop, said: "We're delighted to be open again, seeing all our regular customers. We've had lots of people just put their head in the door, which is lovely.

"It's really nice to see all the local familiar faces."

And Amanda Holdgate at Head Rush Gifts agreed, saying: "I'm loving it; I'm just please to be open.

"There's been a steady flow of people and I'm looking forward to the future to see how things go."

She admitted to a few nerves at reopening, but added: "I'm very excited and have got lots of ideas for the future, so hopefully we'll stay open for a while now."

For pub goers it meant the long-awaited first sip of a draft beer and a drink in a beer garden, with the weather playing along and remaining largely sunny for most of the day.

One drinker described it as 'like Flora Day' with every table taken at The Bell.

Taking up residence in the former Heathercraft shop, which before that was New Look, the shops have combined their stock under one roof.

Manageress Sue Goodwin and deputy manager Sarah Newman have overseen the relocation, which means the shop is now in a more central location in the main street.
