Grants of over £1,000 have been handed out by Falmouth Town council in the last giveaway before local elections on May 6.

At a meeting of the Finance and General Purposes Committee on Monday night councillors first voted to give £200 to the small military veteran's charity Give Us Time.

Alex Youngs told councillors that the national charity, which helps veterans and their families from all services, was in crises. He said its fundraising was down £80,000 this year because of Covid.

It was asking organisations all over the country associated with supporting the military for small donations of £200 each.

Not only did councillors agree to the £200 but town mayor Steve Eve and deputy mayor Trish Minson topped it up by another £200 to £400 from their funds.

"We are already a town with a connection to the navy and we should support this," said Mr Eva.

Councillors also voted to give £200 to the Carnon Carers for a bus trip and day out to Bodmin Railway for all the carers who had not been able to have a break because of Covid.

Some of them had not even left their homes, Sandra Tregidgo from the group told councillors.

Councillors also voted to make it an annual award of £200 to the carers as well.

Finally councillors voted to support the Cornwall Pride Bus on tour with a grant of £500

The Pride Bus is the only one of its type in the world, Cornish Pride chairman Matthew Kenworthy Gomes told councillors

He said the bus was vital in connecting with LGBTQ+ people in rural communities, some of whom may not have met others who identify as they do before.

It will serve community with access to mental wellbeing support servies, homeless and youth charity as well as providing an event for local communities with musicians and entertainment.

It was planned that the bus, sponsored by Kernow Bus, would go out on June 25-26 and would be completely Covid safe.

"It's for everyone," said Mr Kenworthy Gomes. "Cornwall Pride prides itself on what we state which is 'Love who you want to love and love who you want to be'."
