A PROPOSAL to replace the bus shelters in Falmouth with environmentally friendly ones has been given the go-ahead by councillors - subject to contract.

At a meeting of Falmouth Town Council's finance and general purposes committee on Monday, councillors were told the replacement programme would start with the shelters on the Moor.

Town clerk Mark Williams said that the proposed shelters would have a 'sedum' roof which was low growing with shallow roots systems meaning that once it is established it will not become overgrown and won't require watering, deadheading or mowing.

However this would mean renewing or extending the contract the council currently has with the provider Fernbank to 2030.

It would be the same contract as they currently have with no expenditure by the council as Fernbank advertise on the shelters and in return they keep them maintained and cleaned.

Deputy mayor Trish Minson raised concerns about the company keeping to its side of the contract over cleaning and maintenance.

"It doesn't happen very quickly because time and time again I have asked for the maintenance to be done and they're very slow at doing it," she said. "I think we ought to make sure they are doing what they agreed to do."

She said at the moment they wait for someone to tell them and then take a long time to do anything about it. That was not how the contract should work and they should be more proactive about it.

Town clerk Mark Williams said that could be a conversation in the contract renewal.

Councillors voted to support the move subject to contract.
