DRONE pictures posted on Facebook of a controversial student block currently being built in Penryn has reignited debate over whether it should have been built there in the first place.

Christopher Thom, who regularly posts drone footage of the town, posted the images on the Penryn Legends Facebook yesterday and instantly started a debate on the size and position as well as what they are being built from. So far the post has attracted 88 comments on the site.

Permission was granted for the 528 bed student accommodation block in Kernick Industrial Estate by Cornwall Council's planning department in 2018.

The development on Parkengue Road is being redeveloped to include a mix of self-contained studios and cluster apartments with shared kitchens and communal spaces.

Along with the accommodation facilities, the scheme will feature a 'Winter Garden Library' with shared working space for both students and business start-ups.

However there are still many people not happy with the accommodation being built there branding it the 'Kernick Carbuncle'.

What the building will look like once it is completed.

Tamsin Young posted: "It is hideous, that’s for sure. I think every building at the uni is ugly the only decent building is the convent itself. Nothing matches. It’s all here, there and everywhere. Looks dirty, untidy does not suit our town at all. No problem with it being here in fact it’s great for our local kids but for god's sake sort out the buildings they are getting out of hand."

However local student Tianna Tonkin, who is studying out of county said: "Everyone complaining about it being student accommodation students need places to live you're all forgetting us students are the future. No one would be complaining if it was housing for locals we all need to study and learn and be the best we can be what’s the issue I know it’s an eyesore now but in long run it’s worth it."

Mark Newman posted: "Isn't this what locals wanted? Students housed at the university to hopefully help free up HMO in the local area. Yeah not the prettiest but it's not finished plus some of the industrial buildings it's built next too are not the prettiest and I am sure they will have to put the pitch back properly better than it was."
