Flora Day may not be taking place for the second year in a row but that won't stop the town still marking the occasion in its own small way.

For as Helston Flora Day Association said: "It would not be May in Helston without flags."

Association stewards and volunteers were busy over the weekend putting up the coloured bunting that usually adorns the town centre streets each Flora Day.

This year's celebration was due to have taken place this Saturday, May 8, but for the second year running there will be no dancing and no crowds due to the ongoing coronavirus restrictions.

In a bid to still give the town something of that celebratory feel, to mark the arrival of spring and the coming summer months, the flags have been put up as usual however and some residents are still likely to decorate the outside of their houses as they would normally for the day's festivities.

However, with the current restrictions preventing the gathering of large groups, and allowing just two families, or a maximum of six people, to meet outdoors then people are warned against trying to hold anything 'ad hoc'.

Instead, the association is planning to show videos from previous years on its Facebook page, so that people can still get their Flora Day fix safely.

Helston Town Band also appears to have something up its sleeve, although members are keeping tight lipped about the details.

Last year the band went out all to create a video showing the band playing the famous Flora Dance tune separately in their homes, gardens and more unusual locations local to them, which was then pieced together into one montage.

Writing on its Facebook page on Saturday, the day members would normally be out for an early morning walk through the town playing the tune to mark May Day and one week until Flora Day, Helston Town Band teased that something new could be on the way for this year.

It said: "We can't believe a year has passed and we are yet again without our beloved Flora Day!

"Of course, for many of us, May 1 marks the beginning of the main Flora Day countdown and the buzz around Helston certainly begins to escalate as we prepare for the best day of the year.

"We were absolutely blown away with the support we received last year for our online creations and for the donations that people kindly gave the band to support us through these strange times!

"Of course, things are slightly different this year as many of us are returning to work and a greater sense of normality resumes. With this is mind, it has proved harder to create so much new online content to share.

"However, fear not, we will still be doing our best to share the spirit of Flora Day 2021 through memories of last year's virtual Flora Day, and snippets of Flora Days gone by – along with the occasional live video and some updated content...

"Keep an eye out on our Facebook page for updates throughout the next week and on the day itself.

"Let's "fill Facebook with Flora" once again!"
