A village priest from Cornwall is to walk 75 miles in a week to support efforts to help some of the world’s poorest communities.

Rev Johanna Clare, Priest in Charge of Mawnan, will be walking the 75 miles during Christian Aid Week (10-16 May) to mark Christian Aid’s 75th Anniversary.

Each day’s walk will include prayers for climate justice and will be completed to help some of the world's poorest communities protect themselves from the twin threats of the climate crisis and the coronavirus pandemic.

Johanna said: "Walking this far in a week is quite a challenge, so I am very grateful to everyone who has agreed to accompany me.

"I am looking forward to walking and praying with friends and church groups from the local area and beyond, and being joined also by children from our school (Mawnan Primary).

"This year is Christian Aid’s 75th Anniversary, but Covid restrictions are having a huge impact on their fundraising activities.

"The work of Christian Aid and their campaign for climate justice is vitally important.

"The climate crisis is leaving people hungry, homeless and heartbroken. From drought to flooding, climate chaos robs people of control over their lives.

The twin threats of Covid-19 and the climate crisis will be the focus of this year’s Christian Aid Week.

The charity is asking supporters to stand in solidarity with those at the very brunt of these global crises, specifically with all those forced to walk long distances to collect water for their families.

Christian Aid partner organisations are empowering communities to access and build water dams or rock catchments near their homes, so women and children are spared the long and often hazardous walk to collect water and families have an accessible water supply for their crops, livestock and hygiene needs.
