Police arrived in Helston town centre this lunchtime to keep an eye on the unofficial Flora Day celebrations taking place.

Despite the event being cancelled, many people have been left wanting to celebrate the day still and have organised their own activities.

Although not nearly the same numbers as a normal Flora Day would expect to see, a small crowd began to build outside the Guildhall ahead of midday, when the Ancient Furry Dance would normally be beginning.

As a result, police arrived to oversee what was happening and ensure no rules were being broken.

The officers ensured that people stayed on the pavements and out of the road, which remained open to traffic as normal, and kept a close eye on proceedings but seemed happy with what was happening and no action was taken.

As the Guildhall clock struck 12, the owners of Bowdens Home Hardware threw open the top window of the shop and played the Flora Dance tune from a loudspeaker for all to hear.

Two of them, dressed in Flora Day outfits, were joined by three other impromptu couples who danced around the small area of Market Place, in front of the shop and up around the steps past Lloyds Bank.

They are not the only ones to have been marking the day in a small way.

Earlier this morning three members of Helston Town Band stood in Meneage Street to play the tune for the socially distanced families and couples who had gathered outside the Guildhall for what should have been the start of the dancing at 7am.

Others have been decorating their homes and businesses, as a nod to the day's festivities.

While people in Helston may want to celebrate, they have been urged to not break any coronavirus regulations doing it, by staying in family groups or a maximum of six people, maintaining a two-metre distance and only meeting outside.
