Dorset Young Farmers Club (YFC) had a highly successful calf show this year, face to face for the first time.

The judges congratulated the members for not just their knowledge and confidence, but for their "beautifully turned out and well behaved" calves.

The results are to be announced at the Presentation Celebration Afternoon on August 1.

The Dorset YFC Calf Show Competition was held on April 24.

It was organised by Matt and Angela Frampton at short notice due to popular update of this particular competition.

The competition judges were Stephen Curtis as Beef Judge with Kevin Goodfellow as the Steward and John Bale as the Dairy Judge with Russell Coombes as the Steward.

John said: "What an interesting day! We started our day at Shute near Axminster and finished at the village of Twyford near Shaftesbury, taking in Puncknowle and Bere Regis along the way, it was a very scenic drive.

"Congratulations to all.

"We found that the members of all the age groups were confident and knowledgeable in animal husbandry, presenting well and the standard of handling was high and the calves beautifully turned and well behaved.....all except maybe for Amy’s calf who just had to lie down!

"We enjoyed meeting you all and thank you for making us so welcome and for taking part in the competition."

The presentations to winners will take place at Kingston Maurward College in the field opposite the county office.

Trophies will be given out for all of this year's competitions.

Beef Judge Stephen Curtis said: "We would just like to say what a great day Kevin and I had travelling the county, being extremely impressed with the standard of all the calves and handlers.

"A lot of hard work and effort was made by all the competitors.

"Tips for future beef calf shows - calves should be clipped to give good shape - half the tail should be trimmed from the head leaving the bottom half to “fluff up”, hooves cleaned and polished!

"Dark trousers and clean boots gained points!!"

The presentation afternoon is planned to be a social event, so registration is required.
