25 YEARS: Multi-storey car-park controversy brought to the attention of Prince Charles

The controversy over the proposed Well Lane Car Park development has been brought to the attention of Prince Charles.

A Falmouth woman who was a member of the Falmouth Action Group which campaigned successfully in 1982 to prevent Carrick from going ahead with plans for the car park has written to the palace.

Mrs Marjorie Walker of Waterloo Place is questioning what change of circumstances have occurred to make planners believe the new scheme would be acceptable.

She has written to Prince Charles in his capacity as the Duke of Cornwall and asked him to use any influence he might have to stop what she calls “this hideous multi-storey car-park being built.

“This is an architectural disaster which people are trying to inflict on our town,” she said.

Mr Walker says she is now too old to become involved on today’s protest committees but hopes her letter might bear some fruit.

Public's help sought to thwart terrorists and smugglers

Help is being sought from the public to thwart terrorists and smugglers attempting to transport guns, drugs and illegal immigrants into Britain via Falmouth and other Cornish ports and beaches…

Areas such as Falmouth and the Helford and other river estuaries are particularly highlighted as likely spots to be used.

Falmouth is known to be used by some modern day smugglers for drugs and other goods and a number of arrests have been made in recent years. But there are thousands of vessels using the port and many illegal ones are known to skip in undetected,.

A campaign has now been launched by the police called Coastwatch. It is being supported by the Customs and Excise Immigration department.

Butcher says he is frustrated by British beef crisis

Frustrated by what he describes as “a lack of any positive action by the Government” a Falmouth butcher has issued his own statement on the present beef crises.

Mr Brian Boreham, who has been running a shop in Killigrew Street for eight years, made no bones about his feelings when he displayed the anti-Europe slogan in his window.

Mr Boreham is urging the public to continue eating British Beef and to turn their backs on European regulations.

The EU imposed a worldwide ban on UK beef exports in as a result of the BSE epidemic, also known as 'Mad Cow Disease'.
