An annual event that couldn't happen last year due to Covid-19 restrictions is back and opening artist's doors across Cornwall.

In an example of artists doing it themselves, Art Studios Open West Cornwall will be opening up many artists’ studio doors during the Whitsun Half term on May 29 - June 4.

Traditionally arts studios in Cornwall have always opened up to visitors and welcomed them during this period.

People who love nosing around art studios, viewing work in the flesh, exploring how things are made, asking difficult questions – and buying work will have been disappointed as last year was the first time studio doors were closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This year they will be opening again thanks to an initiative that enables visitors to find the information they need to visit some 70 artists studios including well known painters Noel Betowski, Paul Wadsworth, Delpha Hudson, Steve Slimm, Paul Lewin, to other local artists Lynda Phillips, Tessa Collett, Peter Wray and Judy Collins, Amanda Richardson, Ray Hopley, to name but a few.

Thematically, there's not much to bring these artists together – just a love of sharing their passion for painting or art, from the detailed abstract patterned paintings of Noel Betowski to the oil brush of Paul Wadsworth.

Set up by artist Paul Westaway, with Francesca Stella, the artist has brought a huge array of local artists together via social media.

Paul has since created an interactive map, and a website for Art Studios Open, West Cornwall as well as a website, Facebook group and interactive map, connecting artists from all over West Cornwall – at literally no cost.

This may prove significant for artists right now, many of whom have lost regular paid work and sales that keep them afloat.

Changes over the last 20 years in the way the art market often means that artists have to pay for everything: publicity, marketing, to show work – even to submit work for exhibition.

All that, and much more, in addition to buying materials and having a space to work.

This is untenable for so many, and artists are often forced to make difficult decisions about how to share their work with audiences.

Grouping together in the time honoured tradition of artists’ groups, this is an eclectic mixture of artists - who are opening up and warmly inviting people in to share their passion for creating art. Every studio will strictly adhere to public safety and respect safe social distancing.

Previous visitors to artist’s open studios have always loved prying and snooping behind doors that are usually closed, and perhaps picking up a bargain.

So if you would like to know more – go straight to Paul Westaways’ website - or social media.

There is lots to find out – and it’s all there thanks to all the artists involved – have a look at where you can find them and when you can visit.
