Police have confirmed more details about an incident on the Lizard Peninsula that led to the death of a little girl on Wednesday.

Devon and Cornwall Police have now said that it involved a 20-month-old girl who was on holiday with her family, and have explained more about what happened.

A spokesperson said: "Police and paramedics were called to a campsite in the Helston area following a report of a collision between a vehicle and a child at around 12.50pm on Wednesday, May 12.

"The collision involved a car towing a caravan and happened on private land.

"Tragically, the child, a 20-month-old girl from the Nottingham area, was pronounced deceased at the scene."

Traffic reports at the time said that the incident took place on the main Helston to The Lizard road, close to the turn off to Cadgwith.

Despite the efforts of emergency services, including the air ambulance team that was called, the little girl was declared to have died at the scene.

The child's family is now being supported by specially-trained officers.

The coroner has been informed and an investigation by officers from the specialist Roads Policing Team continues.
