THE horrific moment a young moped rider died after ploughing into a tractor was caught on a vehicle's dashcam.

Nathan Harmer-Turner, 28, was overtaking a line of vehicles on the wrong side of the road when he hit the tractor and trailer loaded with potatoes as it was turning right.

An inquest at Taunton on Thursday, May 13 heard that Mr Harmer-Turner suffered a catastrophic head injury when he went under the rear wheels of the trailer at Dillington farm estate, near Ilminster, on September 25 last year.

A police investigation said the L plated moped was being ridden at between 38 and 44mph when it overtook some vans and was on the opposite carriageway.

Mr Harmer-Turner, of Martock, tried to brake and steer away from the John Deere tractor unit but struck the trailer and died at the scene.

The tragic incident was captured on the dashcam of a van he had just overtaken, the inquest was told.

Tractor driver Benjamin Turpie had amber beacon warning lights on his vehicle and police say he would have had just over a second to see the bike rider.

Mr Turpie said the first he knew what had happened was after the collision and saw the bike lying ten feet beyond the trailer.

Assistant coroner Tim Hayden heard there were no vehicle defects and no criminal charges have been brought against anyone.

He recorded death as a result of road traffic collision.
