A young student from Truro is raising money for charity as a tribute to his brother who was stillborn.

James Elkins, a first-year student at Truro School, is raising money for Tommy's - a charity who provide funding for research into miscarriage, premature birth & stillbirth.

Around ten years ago, James' younger brother Harry was still born, and James has decided to raise money for the charity in his memory, so far raising over £650.

Julie Elkins, James' mum, said: "He's just decided to do this off of his own back to be honest.

"We lost our little boy Harry ten years ago this year and James wanted to do something quite special because it would have been his tenth anniversary.

"He's always been a really good kid and he's always been quite a sporty boy, he enjoys a lot of sports but particularly running and rowing and cycling, so that's what he set himself for his challenge.

"So he asked if we could set him up a GoFundMe page and the rest is history.

"Last year during lockdown he did a cycling challenge, he cycled 200 miles in May last year for the Cornwall NHS Foundation and raised over £500.

"He was bored during lockdown and also wanted to give something back, so that's what he did, and really enjoyed exploring the countryside.

"It's a bit different this year because he's really busy at school so he's trying to fit all of this in around school and clubs.

"So he's getting up really early in the morning and generally doing two of the three, so rowing and running and then doing the cycling in the evening.

"I think he's hoping to get to the £1000 mark.

"We've had so much support far and wide, friends and family, people from his school, people from his clubs all donating.

"Tommy's is a charity that's very close to a lot of people's hearts and they do such incredible research trying to save the lives of babies so it's a really really important, special charity.

"I'm very proud of him for doing the physical activity and the fact he wanted to give something back, so I'm amazingly proud of him.

James' school also shared their thoughts on what he was doing in a post social media, saying: "1st Year James is taking on a big fundraising challenge this month in memory of his younger brother, who was stillborn.

"Named ‘May Madness’ James will be running 3km, cycling 3km, and rowing 1km everyday for 30 days, which he started on 2 May, to raise money for Tommy’s, a charity that ‘funds medical research into the causes of premature birth, stillbirth and miscarriage, and provides an information service about health in pregnancy."

James said: "Ever since my brother Harry was stillborn, I have wanted to help others going through the same, and reduce the risk of it happening to others.

"Harry will always be part of our family and is sorely missed.

"My aim is just to make a difference, however small."
