Penzance Town Council has elected its new mayor in a rain-soaked ceremony that was broadcast over Facebook.

The heavens opened over the Penzance Mayor Choosing ceremony that took place last night (Tues 18) at Penlee Park Open Air Theatre and councillors did their best to not get absolutely soaked throughout the ceremony.

With several positions to fill, councillors came equipped with umbrellas and coats that no doubt saved many from a going home with the sniffles.

Cllr Jonathan How was elected to the post of town mayor and accepted the role with a speech indicating how he wanted people that came to Penzance to be inspired and feel as if they had arrived at a town from the future.

The next position to be filled was that of deputy mayor, a post which saw Cllr Will Elliot accept his nomination and take up the position for the next year.

After the election of the new deputy mayor came the nomination of civic deputies which saw Cllr Bonnie Jackson accept the role.

A second civic deputy will appointed at a full council meeting on Monday May 24.

Sergeants of Mace were next on the list of appoints and Sid Reed and Mike Arnold were both sworn in to the positions.

A new town crier was also appointed at the ceremony in the form of Phillip Northcote.

The Mayor normally presents a number of awards including the Brian Spiegelhalter Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year Award, the Humphry Davy Prize, and the Mayor’s Cadets, however, due to the scaled-down ceremony, these were not awarded.

A reception and buffet are usually held after the meeting with all catering provided by the talented Professional Cookery Students from the Senara Restaurant at Penwith College.

Again, this did not take place due to the restrictions surrounding the event.
