In what must be one of the most anticipated restaurant openings in Helston for many years, the new meadery is preparing to welcome customers.
The Packet was given a sneak peek inside this afternoon, before the restaurant opens its doors for food this Saturday.
Traditionally meaderies have a medieval theme and Helston Meadery is no exception, but it has been given a nautical twist.
Inside the walls are adorned with a ship's wheel, sails, barrels and anchors – there is even a parrot to greet you in reception.
Lighting is low, with plenty of wood, rope and brass around, giving the feeling of being inside the cabin of a ship.
And, naturally, sea shanties will be playing in the background as diners are served by waitresses in period dress.
Meadery fans will be pleased to hear that the typical menu is remaining, with an emphasis on quality dishes, said owner Tony Gatta.
Customers can expect to enjoy meals such as garlic mushrooms, chicken and chips, spare ribs and classic desserts from head chef Gary Heaney, all washed down with a range of Cornish meads from Newlyn.
"We're going to produce exactly the same menu that everyone expects, but I think we're going to do it just a little bit better. We want a high standard," said Tony.
"There's nothing wrong with bought in stuff, but you can buy it at Tesco."
Fish will come fresh from Hayle-based Seafayre Cuisine, chicken from Etheringtons and cream from Rodda's, as some of the local suppliers being used.
"It will be very family orientated," said Tony, who added that going forward when rules allow they will be able to cater for large parties, with the 'top deck' area seating 20 people.
Tony has around 30 years' experience in the industry, and the meadery, he said, is something of an extension from when he owned a restaurant called Henry the Eighth's Feastery in St Ives, around 25 years ago, which also had a medieval feel with suits of armour and a pair of stocks.
He said he had been called by the original founder of Cornwall's original meadery chain to wish him good luck.
From Saturday Helston Meadery, next to the cinema in Wendron Street, will be open seven days a week, from 5pm through to last orders at 9.30pm, and will be accepting customers without bookings.
