It is said that true love can lift you to giddy heights – and this was certainly true for one couple of Helston who became engaged after their ring was flown in by a drone.

Jamie Hoskin planned the romantic surprise for new fiancee Lee Parkes on her birthday, on the Saturday of the bank holiday weekend.

He had planned a cream tea in the grounds of the Polurrian Hotel near Mullion before popping the question.

However, just three days before the big day the plans took on a whole new level – literally.

After a conversation with friend Duncan Scobie, an experienced drone flyer, the pair hatched a plan to fly the ring in from across the clifftops, attached to the drone.

After obtaining permission from RNAS Culdrose, the hotel and even the drone manufacturers in China, Duncan was all set for the big moment.

Sat on a picnic blanket overlooking Polurrian Beach, at first Lee was unsuspecting – until the drone landed in front of her.

Jamie said: "We stuck the ring on with gaffer tape. There was a wedding going on and she thought it was perhaps for that, but it started getting closer and closer, and then it landed."

When asked Lee's reaction, Jamie said: "Well she said yes!"

He added: "She's quite glad that Duncan recorded it really; it was all a bit of a blur. She was a bit taken aback by it all."

Jamie, who is a self-employed plasterer at JCH Venetian, and Lee, who works for Cornwall Council, have been a couple for four years.

Lee told the BBC: “I was just completely shocked, completely overwhelmed.

“I’m glad I’ve got the footage because I can’t really remember a lot about it.

“Because I’d seen that there was a wedding going on at the hotel, I just assumed that the drone was for the wedding.

“But then it was just coming closer and closer.

“When it landed, I just thought it had run out of battery or something and he’d gone over just to see if he could sort it out.

“Everyone’s been quite shocked by Jamie doing it that way – he’s not really the most typical romantic person.

“I’m just more shocked because I just think now he’s set that bar he’s got to keep on meeting it.”
