Work is set to start on new homes in Bodmin and at Tolgus, near Redruth, as a Cornwall Council-created developer accelerates its housebuilding project.

Treveth, created by Cornwall Council to create new open market homes programme in Cornwall aimed at people who live and work locally to its developments, is ramping up its project to bring 285 new homes.

Preparations are now under way on site for the start of 100 homes at the former St Lawrence’s Hospital site in Bodmin and 185 homes close to Redruth School, in Tolgus.

Contractors have been appointed to both schemes, with Bodmin to be built by Mi-space, part of the Midas Group, and Tolgus by regeneration specialists Vistry Partnerships.

Treveth is delivering more than 600 homes over the next three years which, in addition to Bodmin and Tolgus, includes sites at Liskeard, where work is already progressing, and upcoming schemes at Newquay and Launceston.

Cornish for ‘Homestead’, Treveth is a partnership set up by Cornwall Council to deliver new homes and commercial development to benefit people who live and work in Cornwall.

Its mission includes improving the quality of new homes in Cornwall, especially in the volatile private rented sector, and making them available to local people.

Treveth will prioritise local people first when renting its properties, with its developments aimed at households who have a local connection either through residency, employment or close family, and the majority of homes available will be private rented or affordable properties.

The Tolgus development will offer a mix of one, two, three and four bedroom homes as well as open green spaces and cycle paths with views towards St Agnes Beacon and beyond.

It will include 90 homes for private rent, 73 affordable homes (a mix of affordable rented and shared ownership) and 22 homes for open market sale.

Bodmin is the second phase of the transformation of the former St Lawrence’s Hospital site on the western side of Bodmin, with 100 new two, three and four bedroomed houses and one bed apartments.

Here, 60 homes will be for private rent, 30 affordable and 10 for open market sale.

Homes on both developments will feature fossil fuel-free heating in the form of air source heat pumps as standard, upgraded insulation and features such as solar PV, creating sustainable homes with low energy usage and running costs for residents.

Tim Mulholland, Treveth managing director, said: "From starting our first new build project at Liskeard earlier this year we are rapidly rolling out our build programme which will see 600 new sustainable homes underway by Treveth in communities in Cornwall over the next three years.

Work is expected to start on site at Bodmin this summer and at Tolgus in the autumn with homes scheduled to be available from next year
