FALMOUTH mayor Steve Eva has been nominated for the national Star Councillor of the year Award for all his hard work in the past year during the pandemic.

Cllr Eva says he received a letter "out of the blue' from Falmouth and Truro MP Cherilyn Mackrory telling him she had nominated him for the award which recognises the local (parish and town) council sector’s achievements.

"This came out of the blue," said Mr Eva, "but much appreciated. I believe it show the efforts of the whole town council through the pandemic

"It is the only national award which recognises the work carried out by a town or parish councillor

"I am extremely proud to have been nominated and thank our MP Cherilyn for first noticing and then taking time to put my name forward.

"I am very proud of the town council's efforts through out this pandemic and it shows how the safety of our residents is our number one priority."

His newly appointed deputy mayor Kirstie Edwards said she was 'over the moon' to hear he had been nominated for this award.

"I think my first response to him was 'That’s awesome. I’m so proud of you'. It means that everyone else can get an insight into just how much work he has done for our town.

"In an exceptionally tough year, he has consistently gone and above and beyond the call of duty for Falmouth and our community. He’s an absolute legend! It’s so important that people like Steve are recognised for what they bring to the role- it’s not all cups of tea and cutting ribbons- he’s really, really present in the community and has really done Falmouth proud.”

During the Covid crisis Cllr Eva has been tireless in his work for the people of Falmouth with one of his biggest achievements being the take over of Princess Pavilion and Gyllyngdune Gardens by the town council.

The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) runs awards as part of its work to recognise the local (parish and town) council sector’s achievements.

The Star Council Awards are the only awards in England to recognise and celebrate the local council sector’s brilliant contribution to its communities. They are an opportunity for councils, councillors, clerks, and county associations to showcase how they have made a real difference locally.

This year, the theme of the awards will focus on projects that have positively impacted communities in the context of COVID-19.

Cllr Sue Baxter, NALC chairman, said: “We have had an unprecedented year in which our sector has shown its true commitment to its communities by stepping up to support them through the pandemic. In recognition of this work, and because they deserve to be publicly applauded, I would urge all those community champions who have made a positive difference during COVID-19 to enter the awards.”

The five award categories are:

Clerk of the Year

County Association Project of the Year

Young Councillor of the Year

Councillor of the Year

Council of the Year

NALC will announce the winners at an online ceremony in September.
