Given the current housing crisis faced by the county, some potentially welcome developments could be on the horizon.

A pre-application for advice has been submitted to Cornwall Council for a community-led housing development in The Lizard, Helston.

The proposed development site is on land adjacent to The Triangle on The Lizard and would be for nine homes that would all consist of 100% affordable housing.

The developed homes would also cover a variety of tenures and property sizes.

Cornwall Community Land Trust (CCLT), a real estate agent based in Truro who focus on affordable homes, would be looking to work alongside the Landewednack Parish Council to develop the site to ensure any developments would remain as affordable housing units.

There are currently 35 households seeking affordable rented housing in the Parish of Landewednack and the application will likely be viewed, in part, on the basis of how it would meet the requirements of the area.

In the enquiry submitted by CCLT, they state: "The intention will be to work with the Parish Council to set up a Housing Working Party, made up of local residents who all share an enthusiasm to help meet the local housing need by providing affordable homes in perpetuity for local people.

"The HWP can then help to guide and shape the design of the homes with Cornwall Community Land Trust securing the land, planning approval and ultimately building and managing the homes.

"The proposal will develop and evolve during the pre-planning process, with the scheme design and that of the properties being carefully thought through with consideration given to any impact the proposal may have on the landscape, the character of the area and the AONB.

"Cornwall CLT is also a business member of the Cornwall Wildlife Trust and are keen to help mitigate any impacts this development may have upon bio diversity net gain and also incorporate features which enhance the wildlife potential of the site and area."

As previously reported in The Packet, housing in Cornwall has hit a crisis point, with former Cornwall Council cabinet member for homes, Andrew Mitchell, saying: "We need to see action by Cornwall Council and have something done to tackle the crisis.

"We need a grown up discussion about whether this is the new normal or do we think when we come out of Covid this rush for country living from the big cities will slow up and go back to the pre-pandemic levels.

"But we need to come up with some plans to start addressing this now.

"We need to look at what we are building and who it is for."

More information on this application will be published as updates become available.
