A serious road traffic collision involving a police car took place on the A30 in west Cornwall late last night. 

Several people, including police officers, were treated for injuries with the driver of one of the vehicles, a man in his 20s, taken to hospital.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the A30 between Loggans and Hayle at around 1.45am today (Friday, June 11.)

"The collision was between a Volvo police vehicle and a silver VW Golf.

"Ambulance, fire and additional police units attended the scene.

"The driver of the VW golf, a man in his 20s was taken to Treliske Hospital with serious leg injuries.

"Two passengers from the same vehicle were treated for minor injuries.

"The road remains closed in both directions to allow the emergency services to undertake scene investigation work.

"It is expected that the closure will remain in place for a considerable amount of time; diversions are in place but they will lead to extended journey times.

"An investigation will be carried out into the circumstances of the collision, and as per Force policy for incidents involving a police vehicle, this matter has been referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct(IOPC), and police Professional Standards Department.

"Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact police via 101@dc.police.uk or by phone on 101, quoting log number 0070 of 11/06/21."

The road reopened at 8:50am.
