A pedestrian has received "potentially life changing" injuries following a serious crash in Helston earlier this morning.

Police initially released only limited details about the incident so far, but put out an alert to say that Falmouth Road remained closed at that time. It has since reopened.

Emergency services were called at 8.50am following the crash, which involved a female pedestrian and a car.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene of a serious collision on Falmouth Road, Helston.

"Officers were called at 8.50am to reports of a collision between a female pedestrian and a car.

"The pedestrian has potentially life changing injuries.

"The road is closed at this time."

The force has since given more details to say the collision involved a silver Vauxhall Viva.

An 83 year old pedestrian was taken to Derriford Hospital for treatment. 

Officers from the Roads Policing Team attended the scene assisted by local officers, with the road reopening just before 11.30am. 

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident to contact Devon and Cornwall Police referencing incident 223 of June 11, 2021.

Traffic monitoring system INRIX is reported that the B3297 Falmouth Road, which runs out of town towards Trewennack, was closed in both directions from the Redruth Road roundabout, at Turnpike, to the junction with Gwealmayowe Park.
