People from across Cornwall have made this year's Queen's Birthday Honours list. 

They are being honoured for a variety of achievements, including their contribution to the Covid-19 response.

Here is a round up of the local honours: 

MBE

Gareth Horner, Newquay

Gareth Horner, a Lifeboat Operations Manager at Newquay Lifeboat Station will recieve his honours for his services to the Royal National Lifeboat Insitution. He has been part of the station since 1974 when he joined as sea going crew. Throughout his career at one of the RNLI's busiest stations he has saved over 100 lives whilst managing the station through the uncertainty of the pandemic and one of the buesiest summers on record.

Mr Horner has engaged with the community as well, working with initiatives such as Newquay Safe, to ensure the dangers of the coast, and particularly the risks of drinking near water, are relayed to young people. He has also given regular talks to young people and community groups, acting as an ambassador for water safety initiatives and through this work, he has saved more lives.

His relationships with local fundraising teams, the shop volunteers and the wider RNLI regional team are outstanding. As well as all this he introduced two new classes of lifeboat at Newquay (the D-class and the Atlantic 85), both of which have increased the ability of the station to respond to incidents

MBE

Jane Johnson, Angarrack

Chief Executive, disAbility Cornwall and Isles of Scilly. For services to People with Disabilities during Covid-19. Since becoming Chief Executive of a small Cornish charity in 1997, she has enabled disAbility Cornwall & Isles of Scilly to evolve into the lead pan-disability organisation in the area.

Prior to the first lockdown she took action to protect her most vulnerable staff and members. Throughout the pandemic she worked to help the vulnerable, establishing the Hayle Community Kitchen which provided and delivered 11,000 free hot meals to 500 people who were shielding.

She also raised over £150,000 for new initiatives to support vulnerable clients. Her care for others knows no bounds, she organised for each child to recieve a piece of sports equipment for zoom sessions as well as arranging over 400 calls a week to help people feel less isolated.

MBE

Catherine Anne Scutt, Par

Director of Education and Research, Chartered College of Teaching Ms Scutt has been honoured for her services to Education She is dedicated to supporting and developing teachers at all stages of their career.

Through her work at the Chartered College of Teaching (Chartered College), as well as her contribution to government policy development, she has become a well-respected individual in the sector. She took personal responsibility for meeting the commitments set out in the strategy, gaining buy-in from the Chartered College and working with the sector to develop essential online training for school leaders.

As a former teacher with experience of driving technology use in schools, she supported the free online programme for teachers and leaders set up with the Chartered College, focused on the effective use of EdTech in the classroom.Cat also played a significant role in the development of the Early Career Framework (ECF), which will transform practice for teachers at the start of their career and was extremely well received on its publication in January 2019.

Since launching in 2018, over 200 participants have been awarded Chartered Teacher status. She led teams to produce ‘Impact’; a peer-reviewed, termly journal to support teachers connect research findings to classroom practice that received a MemCom award in 2018.

BEM

Pauline Dawn Giles, St Blazey

Ms Giles from St Blazey has recieved a BEM for her services to the local community. During the pandemic she ran a local resource scheme aimed at supporting the local community, particularly for low income families.

She helped the homeless and those who encountered a state of drug or alcohol dependency or domestic abuse, as well as organising food parcels and essential supplies for those who needed them most during the tough times.

She has now been elected Chair of Cornwall Council. A survivor of breast cancer she also founded founded Bosom Buddies UK which supports other cancer charities.

BEM

Tamsin Harris, Truro

The deputy headteacher at Indian Queens primary school has been honoured for her services to education and voluntary work. When the Covid-19 pandemic broke in early March, Tamsin was asked to step up into the role as headteacher due to the serving headteacher and deputy headteacher shielding.

She took on the extra responsibility for organising cover for vulnerable and key worker children who were attending school, ensuring that they had a daily structure whilst also following the government guidelines for social distancing. While regularly maintaining contact with the headteacher she kept the morale of staff and students up whilst also communicating with the council.

She also volunteered in the community, doing shopping and picking up prescriptions for pepole who neecded them, as well as create and deliver a weekly newsletter containing general information, quizzes, jokes, recipes and local news to the housebound.

BEM

Beatrice Jackson, Bodmin Moor

Ms Jackson's voluntary services for the red cross have seen her nominated for a BEM. She has made a significant impact with her fundraising successes and has raised in excess of £100,000 for the British Red Cross over the years. In 2016, she organised a supper in aid of the Europe Refugee Crisis Appeal which raised over £12,000.

She and her husband have hosted many events in the gardens of their home in Bodmin raising over £10,000. In May 2018, she was nominated by the British Red Cross to attend the HRH The Prince of Wales 70th birthday event at Buckingham Palace to represent the organisation.

In 2019, she continued her support of the local British Red Cross, visiting with the with St Merryn volunteer group, accepting a £4,000 cheque from Perranporth Golf Club Ladies Group, taking part in Red Cross week bucket collection (as she does every year), and holding an Open Garden event at her home, raising £3,000.

BEM

Luke Thomas Francis, Bude

Mr Francis has been nominated for his services to the post office and community in Bude. He started off at the office when he was just 15 and is now the head postmaster. He’s taken on post offices full time and on an interim basis for not much financial reward to ensure rural communities continue to have a post office service.

During COVID 19 lockdown he was the first person to ensure all elderly and vulnerable people were looked after and still provided with the services of the post office, through a home service, in his own time, which he started at the outbreak of COVID. Since COVID he has gone live on social media performing requested hymns and show tunes with ideas and input for the shows.

BEM

Leslie Eastlake, St Tudy

Trustee and treasurer of the St Tudy community shop and former secretary for Wadebridge lions Mr Eastlake has been honoured for his services to the community. He has secured financial support of over £350,000 for the Community Shop and used his considerable business acumen to ensure the shop is on a firm foundation.

He secured another £134,500 in grants from the Power to Change Fund and the Prince’s Countryside Fund in 2016/17 to build a Coffee Shop extension, and has driven local ownership with 275 people investing £60,000 in two share ownership schemes. Covid-19 has had a dramatic effect, with customer visits dropping by 40% and 80% of volunteers lost. Astute financial management was required, and he subsequently secured £12,500 from the Council and the Prince’s Trust.

Working closely with the Shop Manager, Covid-19 community responses were funded that included utilising 58 furloughed workers as volunteers, hiring the Village Hall as a storage depot, recruiting 22 volunteer drivers for free local deliveries for shielded/vulnerable members of the community and a free prescription collection/delivery service from GP Practices in Port Isaac, Wadebridge and Bodmin and providing a driver and vehicle to take residents to hospital.
