An application to build a dance studio in a quiet back garden has been given the go-head - despite some opposition from neighbours.

Professional dancer, aerial performer, Pilates instructor and university lecturer Grace Sellwood had applied to build the studio in the back garden of a house on Treverbyn Road, Falmouth.

The proposed works involve the construction of a timber framed studio in the south-east corner of the rear garden which will be used for private training, teaching and working from home.

The associate lecturer in dance at Falmouth University wants more space to carry out the aerial aspects of her work which needs specialist rigging.

The studio will initially be used for solo training in aerial Pilates, bungee-dance, Pilates and similar activities. It will also be used as a space to teach classes online.

These are currently carried out within the house which is difficult due to space limitations and unsuitable flooring.

But the application met with some opposition from people living nearby who were concerned that the studio would mean more noise and increased parking.

Robert Randall said it was not what he would expect living in a residential area.

"We moved to a very quiet location well hidden and backing onto the Golden Bank estate and have had notice of an application to build a professional dance studio within six to seven metres of our bungalow," he wrote.

"This is not what we would have expected would ever happen in the middle of a residential area.

"We have no objection to the building structure itself but would be very concerned about the continuous sound of music that would be played, which is certainly an integral part of a dance studio."

However he said if soundproofing was incorporated he would withdraw the objection. There were a total of five objections made to Cornwall Council.

The applicant's agent said no significant noise would be produced and the building would be soundproofed.

The application was approved Cornwall Council on the condition the teaching of students in person at the premises was limited to a maximum of two students at any one time and shall only take place between the hours of 9am and 5pm Mondays to Fridays and at no time on Saturdays, Sundays or Bank Holidays.
