The dad of a Helston boy with autism has thanked donors for their 'heartwarming' reaction to a fundraising campaign.

Glenn Carey's son, Fergus, is 15 and has autism as well as complex learning difficulties, meaning he finds it difficult to do lots of everyday things many of us take for granted.

Mobility is one area in which Fergus struggles and can often feel quite intimidated by the outside word as a result.

However, Fergus discovered a new found confidence after a trial with one of Falmouth-based Ice Trikes' specialised trikes.

Having seen his son's reaction to being able to navigate spaces in a completely new way, Fergus's dad Glenn decided to set up a fundraiser in order to help pay for a trike that would be specially suited for Fergus' needs.

Glenn, who lives in Helston, told The Packet: "When he got on the trike he got a new sense of freedom and mobility.

"He's got the stability of the three wheels then, his movements are purposeful, and you can just see the smile on his face.

With the family having scrapped together a quarter of money needed themselves, the fundraiser was set up with a goal of £3,000, which would then be combined with their savings to purchase the £4,000 trike.

Ten days later, the fundraiser has reached an impressive £1,980 and is just under two thirds of the way to its target.
