A project aiming to help get young people into the world of work has launched in Cornwall.

COMPASS is a wide-reaching partnership project, led by Cornwall Council, with the aim of supporting 1,800 young people aged 15-24 to find their direction into education, employment and training throughout Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

The project was reportedly successful in accessing the last tranche of ESF funding under Investment Priority 1.2: Sustainable Integration of Young People into the Labour Market.

The partnership covers the whole of the region, with face-to-face and digital accessibility, and will be based in communities and in fixed centres.

Cornwall Council said: "the aim of COMPASS is to offer young people in the Duchy opportunities to progress, especially those with special educational needs and disabilities and those in need of social, emotional and mental health support.

"Many young people have found themselves in challenging situations following the impact of Covid-19.

"Our partnership has been developed to offer a broad range of activities for young people, maximising the available opportunities."

It's been claimed that all partners will work in a person-centric way, with the young person at the heart of what they do.

There will be a number of activities and courses on offer and these will evolve over the life of the contract in the hopes of reflecting the wants and needs of young people.

Through COMPASS, it is hoped young people will be able to access work taster sessions, employability skills, money matters and debt management, basic skills (English, maths and English as a second language) and City & Guilds qualifications.

Young people may also get to meet employers and find out about the labour market and growing job sectors in Cornwall.

Those accessing the course and interested in their own business can get specific support and signposting to take the first steps towards owning their own business.

CSW Group, who will be managing the project on behalf of Cornwall Council, said: "COMPASS is a great opportunity to build a partnership of professionals that know the young people of Cornwall and can work with them to find opportunities.

"We are delighted to be part of this project working with partners to improve chances for young people in the region."
