A Cornish business owner is putting on free finance workshops for school kids, and wants more schools to take up his offer.

For the past two years, James Savage, who owns Cheap Mortgage Quotes in Truro, has been giving free finance workshops to schools around Cornwall to help kids broaden their understanding of money and the financial world.

After noticing that many of the young, first-time buyers he would deal with through his business were often not too clued-up about how their use of money could affect their standing when it came to getting a mortgage, James decided to try and do something about it and help young people from an early age better understand finance.

James told The Packet: "The jist of it is, it's a high-level overview, giving insight into bank accounts, loans, credit cards, what credit scores, mortgages and pensions are, how gambling can be a slippery slope and what can ruin your credit score and what difficulties you can get into.

"Just kind of giving the kids a little bit of ammo so that when they start experiencing money other than a bank account, they kind of know what to do and what not to do.

"The feedback overall is fantastic, it's an interactive session so they can ask questions about what they've heard or things they want to know.

"We try to cover everything, and teachers think it's amazing and should be taught in schools anyway."

So far, James has given the workshops at schools in Truro, St Agnes, Redruth, Camborne, St Austell and Newquay to name a few, but now wants to spread the word even further and is looking for other schools to jump on board.

"It's freely available, and I've got the time available to do it.

"There's a lot of schools whose radar I'm not on yet, and I just feel like it's such a worthwhile course to do.

"I certainly had no financial education when I was a child and you kind of think there must be some kind of space where they could fit this in.

"Even if it was some kind of assembly type scenario.

"I can't imagine there's a reason it's not being taught, I just can't understand why it hasn't been addressed.

"Everyone I speak to has gone 'why aren't schools biting your hand off?'

"It's free, I'm experienced and qualified to do it and I've got feedback and reviews from other schools."
