Second vaccination doses for people living in Falmouth and Penryn lag far behind doses in other areas at only around 50 per cent of the population, while other areas are as high as 75 per cent.

The figures have prompted further calls for a dedicated walk-in vaccine clinic in the Falmouth area to help fight the current spike in Covid cases as the country prepares to open back up on July 19.

Interactive maps published by the government show that while over 75 per cent of the population of Mylor Bridge and Frogpool have had their a second dose, Falmouth lags far behind with only around 49% having had their second dose. Penryn is even lower at 48%.

Falmouth county and Cornwall councillor Jayne Kirkham highlighted the figures as the reason why there is still an urgent need for a walk-in vaccination centre in Falmouth.

"I have been playing around with the interactive maps to get more localised vaccination rates for Falmouth to see if we are lagging behind other local areas and so can justify a dedicated walk-in clinic and it turns out that we are," she said. "Our second doses are all under 50% compared with the surrounding areas who have closer to 75% second doses.

"This evidence backs up what we have been saying. Falmouth and Penryn experienced a spike in Covid cases. However, for whatever reason - be it a younger population or issues accessing vaccines at Stithians, the urban population have not been as widely vaccinated as the population in the surrounding areas.

"This opens the possibility that some resource could be moved across from Stithians to provide a town centre walk-in vaccination facility so that Falmouth and Penryn can ‘catch up’."

She has sent the figures to the local NHS, Public Health to back up the town's case. The town council recently wrote to health leaders demanding that a vaccination centre is set up in the town to fight the current Covid spike.

Cornwall health chief Rachel Wigglesworth has said there is no need for a dedicated vaccination centre in Falmouth as the Stithians Showground vaccination centre fulfills that need.

However, she has said the increase is down to the 18 to 29-year-old age group and has urged them to get vaccinated.

Cornwall Council's Public Health Team have been contacted for a comment.
