Cornwall has risen to the second highest alert after seeing new cases of coronavirus more than double in a week.

It is after Cornwall and Isles of Scilly recorded 2,366 new cases across the seven days leading up to Monday (July 19) - the most recent data available.

The data, which was not published until almost midnight last night following a delay, does not include the most recent five days due to figures being incomplete.

Promisingly, the last few daily case updates appear to show figures beginning to fall again and we can expect to see that data start to make an impact on the cluster map towards the middle of this week.

The most recent weekly total, however, was 1,046 more cases than were recorded during the preceding seven days - an increase of 79.2%.

It means the case rate now averages 413.8 cases per 100,000 people - a large rise on the 230.8 cases per 100,000 people shown reported last Saturday.

It is enough to push Cornwall into a new case rate tier, making the map of the Duchy now purple rather than dark blue - now second only to the highest rate level which is very dark purple, although figures would have to rise above 800 cases per 100,000 to move into this tier.

A number of case clusters have also seen large case rises, with only two three seeing a fall in cases (West Penwith & St Buryan, Penzance North, and Hayle) and one see no change (Mevagissey & Polgooth).

The Lizard Peninsula has seen one of the highest rises, going from ten cases to 62 in the space of seven days. Marked on the map as 'The Lizard' it actually includes villages across the peninsular including Mullion, St Keverne and the Meneage parish.

Cases in nearby Helston have also seen new cases rise to 84, which is 47 more than were recorded across the previous week.

It is the Newquay area that has the highest case numbers, however, with 212 in the town across its two cluster areas: Newquay West (92, up 38) and Newquay East (120, up 48).

Neighbouring cluster St Columb Minor & Porth has also risen to 104 new cases (more than double the 47 recorded a week earlier) while St Columb Major & St Mawgan has 48, ten more than the previous week.

In all cases, the figures have risen further than in Wednesday's midweek update, when the large rises were first reported.

Right up at the other end of Cornwall, Bude & Stratton has gone from six cases to 40 new cases in the space of a week.

The map shows positive cases by 'Middle Super Output Area' - the name the government gives to the break-up of larger towns and groups of neighbouring towns and villages, with groupings covering a greater area than others.

The minimum population in each area is 5,000 and the average is 7,200.

Clusters are only shown when there are three or more new cases reported at any one time.

Anywhere with between zero and two cases shows white in order to "protect the privacy of individuals and prevent disclosure", the accompanying information states.
