Falmouth University is set to hold a journalism summit looking at the way in which climate change is reported on.

Reporting Earth is a one-day, online Journalism summit held on September 21, a week ahead of the Youth Summit of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 26).

The focus of the summit will be to exchange ideas and generate actionable plans for reporting the climate crisis for young people.

The university has partnered with innovation lab, Fathm, for the summit and the event will include key note speeches, pitch and reporting workshops and panel discussions with journalists.

Falmouth Uni is looking for young people and journalists aged 18-29 to submit ideas on new ways of reporting climate change and will award grants of £1,500 to the four best submissions it receives.

The judging process will be looking at various different aspects of the submissions received, including: Format, social media strategy, distribution, accessing diverse voices and reach.

The topics being covered are as follows:

  • Eco-anxiety / Climate-anxiety
  • Diversity & Decolonisation

Successful entries will receive mentoring from experts in the field, before presenting their original ideas to journalists and scientists in the fields of journalism and climate science at the Reporting Earth summit, held in September.

Submissions should be a single PDF document outlining a prototype idea, methods for implementation and how it covers one of the five key areas highlighted above to: ReportingEarth@falmouth.ac.uk.

Organisers have also stated that all submissions should be original work and anonymised, as well as converted to PDF, before being submitted.

The deadline for submissions is 17:00 (BST) Sunday 8 August 2021.
