Residents in Falmouth out on their food shop have been met with empty shelves this morning as Sainsbury's are seemingly struggling to keep them stocked.

Images are circulating online of empty shelves containing apologetic notes as shoppers are discovering that various different items are selling out, leaving shelves empty.

With empty aisle scenes reminiscent of the panic buying that took place at the start of the first lockdown, shoppers are now trying to work out what may be causing the issues.

Twitter user James Henry (@james_blue_cat) tweeted a picture of his local Sainsburys in Falmouth this morning in which its shelves can be seen to be bare.

Other users then joined in the conversation, tweeting in their own pictures of local supermarkets as well as speculating as to what the cause of the shortages could be.

Users were suggesting several different scenarios which could be the potential cause of the shortages, from the difficulties brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, to the effects of Brexit on drivers, supply chains and distributors being touted as potential causes.

Among the items supposedly missing were bottled water, rice, Weetabix, cat litter, and most types of flour.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s said: "We are working hard to ensure customers can find what they need.

"While we might not always have the exact product a customer is looking for in every store, large quantities of products are being delivered to stores daily and our colleagues are focused on getting them onto the shelves as quickly as they can."

Last week staff at Sainsburys said it had become a 'lottery' as to when deliveries would arrive and what they would contain.

As reported by The Packet, the shortage of HGV drivers is not only being put down to them being 'pinged' by their Covid apps, but also down to the fact that thousands of EU drivers left the UK at Christmas after Brexit and did not return.
