People have been asked to 'Please refrain from being judgemental' after a family of four had to be rescued from a hire boat stuck on mudflats.

Both Falmouth and Porthoustock Coastguard Rescue teams were called to Bishops Quay, Mawgan near Helston on Thursday afternoon at around 12.12pm.

A hire boat with two adults and two children on board had found themselves being left high and dry on a mud bank in the middle of the river with Storm Evert fast approaching.

After a discussion it was decided to send specialist 'mud technicians' out to bring them back as the boat had no shelter, they didn't enough provisions and high tide not due until nearly 10pm when Storm Evert was predicted to be at its height, with 75mph winds predicted.

After posting the rescue on its Facebook page Porthoustock rescue team asked people not to be judgemental after some negative comments were made about the occupants.

"Please refrain from being judgmental with comments on our page, people should not be judged when they make a mistake or are misadvised." said the team. "With the incoming weather and two children on board it was deemed safer to bring them ashore. Every rescue has a risk assessment carried out for the teams and casualties safety, many thanks."

The report from Falmouth Coastguard Rescue read: "1223 - Team tasked to a report of a hire boat aground, Bishops Quay, Mawgan, near Helston.

"Porthoustock Coastguard Rescue Team and full time Senior Coastal Operations Officer S11D were also tasked.

"On scene, a hire boat with two adults and two children was discovered ‘high and dry’ on a large mud bank in the centre of the river.

£Specialist mud rescue technicians were deployed and returned the family to the shore.

"It was decided to bring them to shore as the vessel had no shelter, they lacked provisions for a long stay (high water isnt until 2150 this evening) and the prevailing weather conditions, with #stormEvert looming, bringing the possibility of 75mph winds to the area."

Porthoustock reported: "Team paged to bishops quay to reports of a grounded boat on mud with 4 occupants. Also attending Falmouth Coastguard Rescue Team with mud rescue equipment and S11D. On scene we made contact with the casualties and waited for the arrival of the mud rescue equipment. Two mud technicians made their way to the boat and recovered the casualties and anchored the boat, the casualties were bought back to shore and were safe and well. Equipment was cleaned down and all units returned to station.

"Team closed down and available for next tasking at 1555."
