New goalposts and nets have been installed at Swanvale, thanks to the efforts of a Cornwall councillor and a former mayor.

Cllr Alan Jewell and Roger Bonny, before he left the council, both used money from their town community budget to pay for the posts and nets to be installed on the field opposite Boscawen petrol station on Boscawen Road.

On Thursday both Cllr Jewell and Mr Bonney popped along to the field to see for themselves what their money had bought and to see youngsters already enjoying the nets.

"The old goalposts were past their sell-by date," said Mr Jewell. "Both me and Roger had some money in our town community budget. We sorted it out. It's brilliant to see the kids enjoying themselves here today. It's a really well used facilities.

"There have always been goalposts here and later in the year it is all going to be cleared out, a bit of planting and maybe a cycle path down through here as part of the green corridor.

The installation was carried out by Falmouth Town Council's grounds and facilities team.

Improvements are planned for the Swanvale recreation area as part of the 'Making Space For Nature' initiative that is scheduled to start in the Autumn and the town council thought that new posts and nets would be a worthwhile contribution to both the project and the area.

The open space forms part of the Falmouth Green Corridor linking Tregoniggie Woodland with Swanpool.

As part of the Making Space for Nature project, Cornwall Council is looking to introduce new trees, wildflower meadow and improve the wooded area beside the informal football pitch.

This should increase its value for wildlife and visitors. It aims are to improve urban green spaces increasing their wildlife value, accessibility and community enjoyment. It is hoped it can be delivered in autumn 2021.

Alongside the planting plans, the transport team is considering laying a pedestrian and cycle path alongside the woodland area. This would be subject to a separate consultation as part of a planning application.
