A young girl from Helston has taken it upon herself to raise money for cancer research by completing a 100 mile challenge throughout August.

Lily Williamson, 13, has already begun her 100 miles in August challenge for the Teenage Cancer Trust, clocking up the miles around Helston with her dad.

Having smashed her initial target of £150 within days of starting the challenge, Lily has now raised £355 so far and is working towards a new target of £500.

Baz Williamson, Lily's dad, said: "Over the years we've lost a couple of family members to cancer, so in school she would often do the Race for Life they would put on, which is like a mile or so and they'd split it, and she'd always donate her pocket-money when she could.

"We saw this challenge come up and we put it to her, and Lily said 'I'd love to do that, is it possible?'

"So we just volunteered on the Facebook page for the Teenage Cancer Trust, and she started it on Sunday (Aug 1).

"She's just going hell for leather at the minute with it.

"On the Sunday she did seven miles, which for a 13 year old is pretty amazing to be honest, and we went out yesterday and covered just under five miles.

"She's doing really well."

Being based in Helston, both Lily and her dad have been making the most of the Cornish landscape when it comes to getting the miles done.

"Cornwall's a beautiful place, and there's some amazing tracks to run.

"We try and stick to confirmed paths, we don't go off, so if we do a coastal run we'll stick to a designated path.

"We don't want to risk her getting injured."

When it came to people donating, Baz told The Packet how receptive friends, family and people in general had been to Lily's efforts and how proud he was of her.

"The fact that she's a young 13 year old girl taking this on, some people we haven't seen in years have got in touch saying this is absolutely brilliant.

"We've got family and friends who run marathons who've said 'for a 13 year old she's done absolutely amazing.

"I'm immensely proud.

"The first morning I went out with her for the seven miles she was absolutely brilliant, even when we hit some hills.

"She's just gone from strength to strength, she's amazing.

"There's no moaning from her, she just gets on and does it."

Baz also wanted to extend his thanks to all those who are supporting and donating to Lily, saying: "A massive thank you.

"We'll go through some pain doing this run, but not as much pain as the young children, boys, girls, men, women who suffer with this awful disease.

"If we can raise a little but towards helping somebody or some sort of research, then we'll do our but and complete the hundred miles, if not more.

Lily will be completing the challenge throughout the month of August, and if you'd like to show her some support and donate, you can do so at: Lily's 100miles in August for Teenage Cancer Trust
