A boat has gone over during the Falmouth Week sailing.

Yachts and other vessels are currently taking part in what is arguably the most prestigious event in the sailing programme, the ANCASTA Champagne Race.

However, just before 11am a Mayday distress call went out from one of the competitors, to say that their vessel was in difficulty.

The crew of the Firebird catamaran reported engine failure and that they were drifting toward rocks, close to the mouth of the Helford River.

The press RIB on the water raced over to the stricken vessel, where the two crew members were standing on the overturned catamaran, with no injuries.

It is understood that they have decided to wait for their own safety RIB to arrive, rather than be picked up by the race organisers.

It was previously announced that this year's Champagne Race would be returning to its roots by being only for larger boats.

The course area encompasses the whole of Falmouth Bay and extends up the coast to Gull Rock and beyond.

The finish is usually to the west side of Pendennis headland.

We will bring you full coverage and photos of the race later this afternoon.
