Falmouth's maritime museum has moved to scotch rumours that Events Square is no longer open for business.

Rumours have been circulating on social media that the square, part of Discovery Quay, administered by the museum is closed for events including Falmouth Week the Oyster Festival and Beer Festivals.

But in a statement issued to the Packet the directors of Discovery Quay Square Limited said the claim was just completely untrue and square is already booked for popular upcoming events.

"Events Square, Discovery Quay is available for hire throughout the year. For example, Falmouth Festivals have made reservations for forthcoming events such as the Oyster Festival and the Sea Shanty Festival," they said.

"The National Maritime Museum Cornwall administers bookings for the square and would encourage anyone interested in hiring this space to make an enquiry.’ The Directors, Discovery Quay Square Ltd."

The square has been the home to many events over the years, most famously the homecoming of Ellen MacArthur after she became the fastest person to sail single-handed around the world, finishing in Falmouth and disembarking at Events Square on 7th Feb 2005.

It was also used to celebrate the life of popular Falmouth policeman Andy Hocking after he died suddenly.

Known locally as Events Square it is one of the key open air arenas in Falmouth and as such, plays a key role in helping to host Falmouth Week, Falmouth Sea Shanty Festival, Falmouth Spring Festival and Falmouth Oyster Festival.
