The areas of Cornwall with the biggest rises in Covid cases - and which led to the Duchy having the highest rate of new cases in the country on Tuesday and Wednesday - have been revealed.

Due to being on a five-day delay, Wednesday's update of the government's dashboard map, showing Cornwall's 72 cluster areas and their weekly cases figures, shows the figures for the seven days leading up to Friday last week, August 20.

This was the day that saw Cornwall's daily new positive test results rise to a peak of 953 new cases, having risen steadily over the preceding week, before starting to fall again in the most recent days that are not yet showing on the map.

As a result, national figures on Tuesday, and again on Wednesday, put Cornwall at the top of the list for the rate of new cases, with the Duchy also seeing one of the highest week-on-week rises.

Depending on which figures you look at, the government figures reported 718.3 cases per 100,000 on Tuesday (seven days to August 19) and 771.3 cases per 100,000 on Wednesday (seven days to August 20).

Meanwhile the Press Association figures show 769.7 cases per 100,000 people on Tuesday (seven days to August 20), and 804.1 cases per 100,000 Wednesday (seven days to August 21), with their totals discounting data from just the preceding four days rather than five.

In both sets though Cornwall tops the list with the highest rate.

However, many have pointed out that the figures are calculated using the mid-2020 estimates for the permanent population of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, rather than the heightened population of Cornwall during August, meaning that the average should actually be lower.

The government is reporting that during the seven days leading up to August 20 Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly recorded a total of 4,439 cases, which was more than double the 2,231 recorded during the previous week - a 101% rise.

The case rate averaging 771.3 cases per 100,000 people is significantly higher than the 384.2 cases per 100,000 last Wednesday.

Just one single cluster out of 72 did not see a week-on-week increase in cases - and that was West Penwith & St Buryan which saw no change.

Falmouth Packet:

Newquay two clusters and the surrounding area are now among the highest figures of any cluster in the country, for the same dates.

Newquay West had 129 new cases (up 57, an average rate of 1,742.5 cases per 100,000 people), while Newquay East had 213 (up 101, an average rate of 2,137.3 cases per 100,000) - a combined total for the town of 342 new cases in a week.

Neighbouring clusters St Columb Minor & Porth (156 cases, up 93) and St Columb Major & St Mawgan (121 cases, up 75) have rates of 1,775.6 and 1,058.4 respectively.

A large number of other areas have also seen significant rises, including, locally, Marazion, St Erth & Gwinear Gwithian that all but doubled in a week from 37 cases to 73, Porthleven, Breage & Praa Sands going from 11 cases to 49, Helston from 53 to 84, The Lizard (including Mullion, St Keverne the Meneage parishes) from 22 to 56, and Crowan, Wendron & Stithians going from 31 to 71.

With the exception of one of its clusters, Falmouth has seen smaller rises in comparison, with Falmouth East rising by ten to 65 and Falmouth North rising by only three to 61. However, Falmouth West & South has jumped up by 30 cases to 74, making a combined weekly total for the town of 200 cases.

Falmouth Packet:

The map shows positive cases by 'Middle Super Output Area' - the name the government gives to the break-up of larger towns and groups of neighbouring towns and villages, with groupings covering a greater area than others.

The minimum population in each area is 5,000 and the average is 7,200.

Clusters are only shown when there are three or more new cases reported at any one time.

Anywhere with between zero and two cases shows white in order to "protect the privacy of individuals and prevent disclosure", the accompanying information states.
