Hospital deaths involving patients testing positive for Covid-19 have risen for the second day in a row.

It's as today's daily new Covid-19 case figures in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly show 216 new people have tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours, from 319 yesterday.

The weekly total number of people with at least one positive Covid-19 test result (either lab-reported or lateral flow device) is on a five-day delay. The latest data shows a combined 3,132 people testing positive in the seven days leading up to last Friday, August 27 – a further fall on the 3,411 weekly cases reported yesterday.

It means the weekly case rate average has fallen to 544.2 cases per 100,000 people, compared to 592.7 yesterday and 668.8 cases Monday. For this figure the government uses the mid-2020 estimates for the permanent population of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

The overall total of cases in Cornwall since the start of the pandemic now stands at 36,466.

The daily number of people testing positive for coronavirus in the UK shows 35,693 new cases compared to 32,181 on Monday.

This takes the total of cases since the start of the pandemic to 6,825,074.

The combined number of Covid-19 related deaths in total in the Duchy’s hospitals since the start of the pandemic has risen to 294, following two new deaths - one at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust on Sunday (August 29) and the other at the Cornwall Partnership NHS Trust on August 7 but only now recorded in the figures.

It follows two further deaths recorded in Cornish hospitals last Thursday, August 26 and included in yesterday's update from NHS England.

The total number recorded at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust since the start of the pandemic is now 230, while at the Cornwall Partnership NHS Trust it has risen to 64.

The government update shows the overall number of deaths in Cornwall – including deaths in care homes and other settings – has risen to 504 in the 28 days since a positive Covid case, following two new deaths.

The number of deaths in Cornwall simply with Covid-19 on the death certificate is at 598 in the most recent data available. It shows that four new deaths occurred in the week leading up to Friday, August 20, the most recent date given, after the figures updated today following a delay on Tuesday.

The overall UK figures show that 207 more people have died within 28 days of their first positive test result - a large rise from yesterday's 50.

Total UK deaths within 28 days since the start of the pandemic stands at 132,742. These figures include people in care home and other settings.

Up to Tuesday, August 31 a total of 48,086,605 people in the UK have had their first Covid-19 vaccination dose, while 42,908,022 have had their second dose.

In Cornwall it is 427,461 with their first dose and 393,014 with their second.
