A weekend of celebrations are about to get underway in Helston today as Harvest Fair returns to the town.

Following a break last year due to the pandemic, events are back on again, beginning with the Fun Dog Show at Coronation Park this afternoon (Saturday).

Taking place on the green area near the Old Cattle Market, entries open at 12.30pm with classes starting at 1pm.

They include 'most handsome dog', 'prettiest bitch', 'golden oldie' and 'cutest puppy', as well as fun classes such as 'waggiest tail', 'best legs combo', 'fancy dress' and 'My dog's got talent!', with ten in total.

Entry is £1 per class, cash only.

Helston Carnival then takes place this evening, with categories for large, medium and small float, decorated bike/buggy or wheelchair, vintage vehicle and walkers.

Judging will take place at Helston Tesco at 4.45pm before the procession gets underway at 6pm, heading down Trengrouse Way and through the main street before turning around in Coinagehall Street and heading back up the hill through Wendron Street, Godolphin Road and on to Tesco again.

The event has been sponsored by Flambards, with cash prizes for the winners. Entry is free, with no need to register in advance, just turn up on the day in costume.

The weekend wraps up tomorrow (Sunday) with the Horticulture & Craft Show at the Old Cattle Market. Doors open for viewing at 1.30pm, ahead of the presentation of cups and trophies at 4pm. This will also include prize giving for the Garden Competition that took place during August.

Helston Town Band will be playing outside through the afternoon and there will be a raffle.

The show includes a range of classes from flowers, fruit and vegetables to crafts, photography and children's entries, as well as peg dolls made at the Krafty Kids sessions run at the Museum of Cornish Life on the last two Thursdays of August.

There has also been a shop window competition and 'find the mice' trail running during August, a two-day open bowling competition at Helston Bowling Club over the bank holiday weekend and the Pond Hoppers Model Boat Club will be at the boating lake on Sunday giving a display.

Photographs from the weekend will appear in this Wednesday's Helston Packet.
